As well as generating around 9% of consumer spending annually, the industry employs over 886,000 people, which in turn equates to 3.1% of all employment in the UK. In 2006, organisations spent a total of £43.6 billion on direct marketing with a value of sales of £125 billion being directly attributable to it. So not to be discounted...
